Google says it’s sending billions of clicks to websites every week — through AI Search alone.
Nick Fox, SVP at Google, dropped that number on LinkedIn this week. His exact words: “We continue to send billions of clicks to the web every day through Search.” And separately: “We’re now sending billions of clicks to websites every week through AI features in Search alone.”
Sounds good. Except it landed the same week a SparkToro study (via Similarweb clickstream data) confirmed that 68.01% of Google searches in the US ended without a single click in early 2026 — up from 60.45% just two years ago.
So which is it?
Here’s what I think is actually happening: both numbers can be true at the same time. Google’s total search volume is enormous — even a small percentage of “clicks through AI features” is still billions in absolute terms. But your site isn’t Google’s whole audience. Your site is competing for a shrinking slice of a pie that’s mostly staying inside Google now.
What this means for us in Nigeria:
→ If your content strategy is still purely “rank #1, get the click,” that playbook is worth less every month.
→ Branded searches, local business queries, and high-intent buying searches still convert well. Protect those first.
→ Being the source AI quotes matters now almost as much as being the link someone clicks.
I said this when we covered AI Overviews a few days ago — the sites that survive this shift are the ones building real audiences off Google, not just praying to the algorithm.
Which number do you trust more: the billions Google claims, or the 68% zero-click reality your Analytics is already showing you? Drop your GA4 screenshot in the community, let’s compare notes.
