I get this question inside the community almost every week: “Noble, I have ₦100k for marketing. Ads or SEO?”
Everyone wants a straight answer. Here’s mine — and it might annoy both camps.
Neither. Not yet.
Before you spend a single naira on Meta Ads or wait months for SEO to kick in, answer this first: does your offer actually convert when someone lands on it? I’ve watched too many small business owners burn ₦100k on ads driving traffic to a WhatsApp number nobody replies to fast enough, or a website that takes 9 seconds to load on a budget phone in Ibadan.
Fix the leaky bucket first. Then decide.
If I had to split ₦100k between the two, here’s the framework I actually use with clients inside the community:
✅ You need customers this week — event, launch, seasonal product — put 70% in paid ads. SEO won’t save you on a deadline.
✅ You’re building something people will search for by name eventually — a clinic, a school, a niche service — put 70% in SEO. Ads dry up the moment you stop paying; SEO compounds.
✅ You genuinely don’t know your customer’s search behaviour yet — spend the first ₦20-30k on ads purely for market research. Ads give you data in days. SEO gives you data in months.
The mistake I see most: SMEs treating this as a permanent choice instead of a sequence. Ads can fund the runway while SEO grows underneath it. The businesses that win eventually stop needing to choose — they layer both.
Where would you put your first ₦100k? Tell me in the comments — I read every reply.
Argue with me in the community — it’s where Nigerian marketers actually work this stuff out.
