I’ve reviewed more Meta Ads Manager accounts for Nigerian SMEs than I can count. The pattern is almost always the same. Business owner puts ₦50k into “boosting” a post, gets a wave of likes and comments, sees zero extra sales, and concludes “ads don’t work in Nigeria.”
Ads work. What they did wasn’t advertising. Here’s where the money actually goes missing:
1. Boosting a post instead of running a campaign
→ The “Boost Post” button optimizes for engagement, not sales. You paid for likes. Likes don’t pay your rent. Use Ads Manager and pick Conversions or Messages as the objective.
2. No pixel, no tracking, no idea what actually worked
→ If you can’t tell me which ad brought which sale, you’re not doing marketing, you’re gambling with better graphics. Install the Meta Pixel before you spend a single naira.
3. Targeting “everyone in Nigeria” because it feels safer
→ Broad targeting burns budget fast in a market this price-sensitive. A ₦20k daily budget spread across 200 million people reaches nobody twice. Narrow it: location, age range, interests that actually match your buyer.
4. Changing the ad every two days because it “isn’t performing”
→ Meta’s algorithm needs about 50 conversions in a week to exit the learning phase and get efficient. Most SMEs kill the ad on day 3, right when it was about to start working.
5. No landing page, just a WhatsApp number and hope
→ WhatsApp can work, but if your only next step after the ad is “please DM me,” you’re relying on the customer doing the selling job for you. A one-page site with your offer, price, and a clear CTA converts better every time I’ve tested it.
The naira math that matters: if you’re spending ₦100k a month and can’t name your cost per lead, stop. Drop it to ₦10k, fix tracking, get that number, then scale what’s proven. Scaling a broken funnel just means losing money faster.
Where’s your ad money actually going right now — do you even know? Be honest in the comments, I’ll tell you what to fix.
