My Exact Keyword Research Process Using Free Tools Only

People think keyword research needs a ₦60k/month subscription. It doesn't.

Here's the exact process I run — start to finish, zero naira:

Step 1: Start with the customer, not the tool.

Before I open anything, I write down 5 questions I've actually heard people ask about the topic. WhatsApp groups, X replies, DMs, comment sections. Real language, not my guesses.

Step 2: Google autocomplete + "People also ask."

Type your seed keyword, don't press enter. Every suggestion Google offers is a real query with real volume. Then scroll to "People also ask" and keep expanding — it generates endlessly. Free, and straight from the source.

Step 3: AnswerThePublic (free tier).

One or two searches a day, but it maps question keywords beautifully. "How," "why," "for," "vs" — these are the ones that rank fastest for new sites.

Step 4: Keyword Surfer or Keywords Everywhere.

Chrome extension. Shows volume and related terms right inside your search results. No tab switching, no login. I keep it on permanently.

Step 5: Google Trends — the filter nobody uses.

Set location to Nigeria. If a keyword is trending down over 12 months, I drop it no matter how good the volume looks. Chasing a dying keyword is wasted months.

Step 6: Search Console — your unfair advantage.

If your site has any traffic, go to Performance. Look for queries ranking positions 5-20. Those are keywords Google already thinks you're relevant for. Improving one of those beats chasing a brand new keyword every time.

Step 7: Steal the SERP.

Search your target keyword. Open the top 3 results. What subheadings do they use? What did all three miss? That gap is your angle.

Step 8: The final filter.

Before I commit: Can I write something genuinely better than what's ranking? If no, I pick another keyword. Volume means nothing if you can't win the page.

That's it. Eight steps, zero cost.
